Hui Kāpehe Program

The Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) is proud to announce that its Hui Kāpehe Program has been selected as one of seven national grant program recipients through the Native Hawaiian Career and Technical Education Program (NHCTEP), in partnership with Alu Like Inc.

The KIRC's Hui Kāpehe college internship program offers work-related experience, community service learning, and job shadowing opportunities related to career and technical education (CTE) focusing on sustainability and Hawaiian culture. 60 students of Native Hawaiian descent will be accepted for intensive internships in one of KIRC's core program areas: Operations, Ocean, Restoration, Culture and Administration.

Program Offerings

  1. Sixty (60) applicants will be accepted into Hui Kāpehe each semester
  2. Paid certification training and/or educational assistance for Native Hawaiian students who fulfill all program requirements
  3. 100 hours paid internship for Native Hawaiian students with the Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission in one of five (5) program areas:
  1. Operations. Approved Programs: Auto Body Repair & Painting, Automotive Technology, Culinary Arts, Sustainable Construction Technology, Liberal Arts, Hospitality & Tourism
  2. Ocean. Approved Programs: Natural Science, Marine Option Program, Hawaiian Studies, Liberal Arts
  3. Restoration. Approved Programs: Natural Science, Agriculture & Natural Resources, Hawaiian Studies, Liberal Arts
  4. Culture. Approved Programs: Agriculture & Natural Resources, Hawaiian Studies, Liberal Arts, Hospitality & Tourism
  5. Administration. Approved Programs: Accounting, Administration of Justice, Business Careers, Business Technology, Liberal Arts, Hospitality & Tourism

Program Requirements

  1. Mandatory program meeting (TBD)
  2. Academic promise letter - signed
  3. Minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA preferred
  4. Priority given to those enrolled in at least 12 credits per semester
  5. Priority given to second year students on a CTE program certification track and/ or pursuing a two year degree
  6. 300 hours of program relevant training prior to internship (includes pre-approved UH Maui College courses)
